No Christmas dinner is complete without a pile of crispy, roasted potatoes. But have you ever tried to grow your own?

“Grow in large containers or potato bags using fresh peat-free multipurpose compost,” says Julian.

“Plant three tubers about 10cm deep, water well, and keep topped up with compost as shoots appear. Move containers under cover (such as a greenhouse, porch, or conservatory) before frost arrives, and harvest after about 12 weeks, just in time for Christmas dinner.”

Top tip: Use cold-stored ‘second cropping’ seed potatoes, available from garden centres and plant as soon as possible in September.
