While you may have just materialized from the pink void into the fantastical world of Palia, you can’t rely on your Kilima Valley neighbors charity forever. Now that you have been provided with a Housing Plot, it’s up to you to turn all that land into money. What better way to start earning a little cash then by Gardening?
Gardening is one of the core Skills you will learn in Palia. By purchasing Soil Plots and Seeds, you can plant your very own crops at your House. Sell those crops to turn a profit, craft tasty Cooking recipes, or even whip up some tasty jam or pickles.
But where to get started? This page of IGN’s Palia guide will serve as a complete breakdown for Gardening in Palia, from where to get seeds, the best farm layouts, and more!
Getting Started
So, it only makes sense that before you get started with your own Garden in Palia, you are going to need a few things: a Soil Plot, Seeds, and the Tools for the job! Here are how to unlock all the Gardening requirements:
How to Get Gardening Tools
After completing the “Welcome to Palia” series of tutorial quests, you will unlock another quest series called “Learning the Ropes”. Talk to Badruu (often found near the Daiya Family Farm in Kilima Valley) to learn the basics of Gardening. As a reward, Badruu will gift you the Makeshift Watering Can and the Makeshift Hoe.
As you level up your Gardening skill, these tools can be upgraded. To do so, you will need to reach new Gardening Levels to unlock purchasable blueprints from Badruu’s Gardening Store. With the blueprint bought, you can use your Crafting Table to construct improved tools using better materials.
Where to Get More Soil Plots
You will get your very first Soil Plots from friendly farmer Badruu for free! Talk to Badruu once you have started the “Learning the Ropes” quest near the start of the game to get a tutorial on Gardening and secure your first two Soil Plots.
You must unlock Badruu’s Gardening Guild Store by completing the Gardening 101 tutorial quest first.
To get any more Soil Plots in Palia, you will need to purchase more from Badruu’s Gardening Guild Store. Your first additional Soil Plot will cost 250 Gold. After that, each following Soil Plot you purchase from Badruu will cost increasingly more. You can only purchase a total of nine soil plots for your Garden at this time.
Where to Get Seeds
Seeds can primarily be purchased from Zeki’s General Store, located in the heart of Kilima Village. Alternatively, you can sometimes harvest a Seed as a bonus when harvesting grown crops.
However, once you have unlocked the Seed Collector blueprint at Badruu’s Gardening Guild Store, you can use this Crafter to turn grown crops into more Seeds! With multiple Seed Collectors, you might never need to purchase seeds from Zeki again.
The Seed Collector blueprint can be purchased from Badruu’s Gardening Guild Store after reaching Gardening Level 2 for 100 Gold.
How to Get Fertilizer
On top of the effect bonuses that some crops provide, Fertilizer can be placed on top of planted crops to grant additional bonuses! Some types of Fertilizer can be bought from either Zeki’s General Store or Badruu’s Gardening Guild Store.
The good news it, you can also craft your own Fertilizer! To make Fertilizer, you will need to craft a Worm Farm. The Worm Farm is a Crafter unlocked at Fishing Level 4, and its blueprint purchased from Einar’s Fishing Guild Store.
Depositing crops and other compostable resources such as Meat or Mushrooms with process those items into both Worms and Fertilizer. Depending on which type of Worm Farm you use (Common or Glow Worm Farm) and which item you place inside it, you can craft different sorts of Fertilizer.
Crops
There are several different types of Crops currently available in Palia’s open beta:
- Carrot
- Onion
- Tomato
- Cotton
- Potato
- Wheat
- Rice
- Blueberry
- Apple
Each crop has its own unique effect bonus. In Palia, a crop’s effect bonus grants a buff to other nearby crops located above, below, and to either side of it. For example, any crops planted above, below, and to the left or right of a Potato get the effect bonus of staying hydrated after initially being watered.
How to Get Blueberries and Apples
Blueberries and Apples are late-game crops that can only be obtained after reaching Gardening Level 10.
After reaching Gardening Level 10, you will unlock the ability to purchase Blueberry Bush and Apple Tree Seeds from Badruu’s Gardening Guild Store. These seeds can only be purchased using Gardening Skill Medals.
There are two ways to unlock Skill Medals in Palia currently:
- Unlock Skill Medals every time you level up that respective skill
- Complete Weekly Challenges for that respective skill
At this time, Weekly Challenges are not available in Palia’s Open Beta.
How to Level Up Gardening Quickly
The real money to be made from Gardening comes from harvesting Blueberries and Apples, two late-game crops in Palia that can not only be harvested multiple times in a row, but each harvest rewards multiple crops in each go. However, you have quite a bit of leveling to do before you can get those seeds.
Your Gardening skill only increases every time you harvest a grown crop. Hoeing, planting, watering, and weeding does nothing to increase your Gardening skill. The quickest way to level up your Gardening skill is to plant crops with fast turn-around.
To level up Gardening quickly, focus on growing Carrots and Rice in your Soil Plots. Both of these crops only take three days to grow. Feel free to sprinkle some Tomatoes into the mix, as these can be harvested more than once and also offer a water-retention bonus to any nearby crops!
