There are certainly things to like about Agave. The owner, Mas Owen, is knowledgeable about plants and has a good eye for design. He also provides digital renditions so you can visualize what your yard could look like–if everything goes ideally. The key phrase there, unfortunately, is “if everything goes ideally.”
I signed a one-year contract for “full” front-yard maintenance at about $500 a month. That’s not cheap, but I was willing to pay for comprehensive service because my wife and I both love the look of a well-kept yard, even though we lack the time and expertise to maintain one ourselves.
You can probably guess where this is going: the experience didn’t live up to the promise. We often had to chase Mas and his team to follow through on even basic commitments, such as installing new flowering plants specified in the contract. This became a routine–roughly twice a month. When we called to check in, we’d usually hear excuses like “the plants are back ordered.”
To make matters worse, Agave’s internal communication is fragmented. You don’t get a single point of contact–you get several. One person handles tree and shrub treatments, another deals with the irrigation system, a third manages billing, and sometimes a fourth shows up for “general maintenance.” It’s up to you to coordinate among them, follow up on loose ends, and ensure that everyone’s on the same page. For a company that charges premium rates, that lack of organization is both surprising and frustrating.
The final straw came when the finished yard looked nothing like the renditions. When I brought this up, Amy (one of several Agave staffers) said, “Well, the renditions are how things look when everything goes ideally–things may not.” I wish I had responded, “Well, I pay $500 a month if things go ideally–things may not.”
Another major frustration was Agave’s relentless upselling. About once a week, they’d recommend additional services–often things that seemed like they should have been covered* under “full maintenance,” but were apparently left out to increase revenues. For instance, despite having weed and insect control as part of the plan, when weeds persisted, I was told, “That’s not covered–you’ll need to replace the entire lawn with new sod.” Needless to say, that would have cost thousands of dollars. Likewise, when our crepe myrtles had an aphid infestation, we were charged $129 each time they sprayed–scheduled twice a month–with no guarantee of when the issue would be resolved. If anything ever sounded like a money pit, this was it.
It’s been about four months since I canceled the contract. Recently, I noticed that one of the dwarf crepe myrtles they had planted had died. I texted Mas, and he sent one of his team members (Matt) to look at it. Matt said they wouldn’t replace the plant because the contract had been canceled–which is fair–but then tried to suggest that I should have ordered more plants for a full hedge. When I pointed out that I had followed Mas’s original recommendations and renditions, he changed his story and blamed the irrigation system, adding that the plants would fill out in two years if I fixed it.
All in all, my experience with Agave was disappointing. While they talk a good game about design and plant expertise, the follow-through, communication, and accountability just weren’t there. Between the constant upselling, lack of ownership, and the need to manage multiple points of contact yourself, Agave ended up being far more hassle than help. Unfortunately, I found the team to be less than transparent, and the service far from worth the price.
We have worked with Agave over the past few years for yard maintenance and small projects. We were impressed by their customer service, friendliness, and care of our property. We decided to partner with them to beautify our backyard and front entry after we had major construction to build a pool and upgrade out water supply (we’re on a well). Idalia is an excellent designer who patiently worked with us for weeks and weeks as we asked so many questions to refine the design. She brought excellent ideas and truly understands flow and layout so that it looks good from any angle. We didn’t deviate much from her proposal, and we absolutely love her design! The project team, led by Eduardo, brought the design to reality. The whole project took less than 3 weeks including major site prep, bed and paver construction with steel edging, a new irrigation design and install (led by Santiago), plant/tree/turf install, and a 4’ water feature. Communication was excellent throughout. Crews were onsite every day, and we had the schedule the day before. Francisco (foreman) was onsite every day and ran a tight ship. The crew’s attention to detail, professionalism, and cleanliness on the site is admirable. We were consistently impressed compared to working with other providers in the past. Eduardo and Santiago were onsite regularly checking on progress, adjusting as needed. Francisco always stopped whatever he was doing when we came out and was very patient with our questions. They worked with us on the exact placement of plants, and we made a couple of tweaks in real time that the team accommodated with no friction. We even discovered a drainage issue during installation. We paused briefly, huddled on a solution and they had it implemented the next day, so we didn’t lose any time. We had a group text thread where we could raise any questions or concerns, and they were usually answered within an hour or so. It was a huge investment, and we felt like partners. It didn’t stop there. The installation was completed about 1 month ago and they continue to care for the property on a weekly basis, tweaking things to ensure plants and turf have the best nutrients and hydration. I could say more, but the pictures say it all! This was phase 1 for us. We will be partnering with Agave on phase 2 and 3 for our property as well.
We have loved working with Agave on our landscaping project. The process was easy and well executed. Edwin and his team made a beautiful plan for all our needs/wants. They were quick to respond and resolve any issues. We will continue to work with them even as the project has finished. We would highly recommend them to anyone seriously looking to invest in upgraded landscaping.
AMAZING JOB!! We loved the work and the professionalism of the Agave team. I believe they have the strongest Project Management structure I have ever seen in any contractors I ever worked with. The landscape work looks beautiful and it was completed on time and without any issues. Please transmit my thanks to everyone! Idalia (Landscape Designer), Eduardo (Project Manager), Santiago (Production Manager), Elysia (Project Coordinator), Steven (Crew leader)
We were so pleased with Agave LD, from the initial design to the final completion of the project. Our goal was to enhance our backyard and frame the beautiful oak trees and green space running adjacent to our property. Agave LD took that idea and created a plan that effectively brought the nature area into our living space. The company was absolutely laser-focused on quality and customer service. We’ve done many landscaping projects with other professionals over the years, but this was absolutely our best experience ever.
