MARION, Iowa — Culver’s Garden Center & Greenhouse has transformed its Marion greenhouse into what staff are calling a Mystical Winter Wonderland, a holiday showcase filled with elaborate displays, towering Christmas trees and a full “Wicked” theme inspired by the new film Wicked: For Good.
The annual Holiday Open House runs Nov. 15 and 16, featuring complimentary treats, fresh and artificial holiday greens, gifts, vendors and photo opportunities with Santa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.
Co-owner Tami Culver said the transformation is the result of months of work by the garden center’s staff.
“The staff has gone above and beyond in delivering an unforgettable experience, showcasing their personal talents and heartfelt touches,” Culver said. “We absolutely love hearing when customers tell us there is no other place in Iowa like this.”
General Manager Katie Culver said this year’s theme has quickly become the star of the event.
Visitors will see more than 16-foot tall holiday trees and a sprawling “Wicked” display featuring Glinda, Elphaba, a Flying Monkey, hot-air balloons, a Yellow Brick Road and even a tornado.
“Everybody is obsessed with the Wicked display,” she said. “Everyone who walks out sees it and they’re just like, ‘That’s insane.’ They’re so excited about it.”
Culver said the event has become a tradition that customers anticipate months in advance, noting people often call during the summer asking when the holiday open house will be held.
Along with shopping, giveaways and vendor booths, she said the event is also meant to serve as a community gathering space.
“It’s not even just focused on shopping,” she said. “It’s about everyone getting together and celebrating the season.”
The greenhouse is also stocked with ornaments, gifts, fresh greens and Culver’s gift cards.
“Just come out and experience it,” Culver said. “Even if you’re not coming to shop, just walk through and enjoy the joy and the magic. It smells like Christmas in here.”
